Frequently Asked Questions

I’m thinking about building a house. How do I get started?

These initial steps will help you start planning:

What do you build?

As a custom home building company, Main Street Homes builds custom homes designed around our customer’s needs, lifestyles, and budget. Most Main Street homes start at 2,200 square feet of living space to over 6,000 square feet and include a variety of architectural styles from Tudor, Prairie Contemporary, American Craftsman, and Traditional to Modern/Contemporary. We build whatever style best suits you and your location. Learn more about some of the custom details our clients have selected.

Where do you build?

We build in the location you choose, creating the custom home you want in the setting you want. We build in suburban neighborhoods, higher-density urban areas, and large settings of sprawling acreage. We can build on a home site you already own, or can assist in locating, evaluating, and purchasing a building site. We’re building in Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Saline, and surrounding areas of Michigan. For a selection of sites currently available by Main Street Homes, we invite you to explore Pine Ridge Estates and Three Arch Bay.

What if I already own a site?

Whether you already own your own homesite or are in the beginning stages of finding one, our team of experienced professionals will assist you in every step of the building process.

How long does it take to build a house?

The size, complexity, and level of detail determine how long it will take to build any particular house. During the planning process of your home, Joe will provide an estimated timeline of your particular project based on the overall square footage and other important factors. Most homes take a minimum of eight months+ to complete. Learn more about our home building process.

How many custom home designs can I choose from?

Main Street Homes doesn’t limit your options to an existing set of home designs. Instead, we talk in detail about your criteria. Our architects (we work with celebrated architect Jeff Ziegelbaur) will then review their portfolio of over 5,000 home designs to find the plan(s) that best matches the size, design, and features you are looking for, or we can design a house from the ground up. It all depends on what you’re looking for in your new home.

Is it more expensive to build a home than to buy an existing house?

No. Building a house can be as affordable as buying a used house, when you consider the repair and remodeling costs associated with moving into someone else’s house. And there are many benefits to building your own home, including the ability to customize it for your family’s lifestyle needs – including mother-in-law suites or other universal design features, home offices and command centers, spa bathrooms, fitness centers, yoga/meditation rooms, and screened porches.

Do you do renovations, or whole homes only?

We do both complete homes and larger scale renovation projects, like adding significant square footage, major kitchen remodels, or renovating an entire home. We offer full construction for additions, renovations, and upgrades, including everything from kitchens, bathrooms, basements, outdoor living areas, in-law suites, and second story expansions. How can I see samples of your work?

Browse our photo gallery or contact us to schedule a walkthrough of a home under construction or recently completed. We would love to show you the level of quality and attention to detail that goes into every home we build.
